COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Two animal-rights groups are asking the city of Greenwood Village to learn to live with coyotes instead of going forward with a plan to kill them.

The American Humane Association says in a letter to the city council that residents should keep food picked up and pets inside to keep coyotes away. Greenwood Village residents say they’ve recently seen a spate of aggressive coyotes in the city, prompting officials there last week to hire a contractor to kill them.

The city says they’ve had 71 reports of coyotes this year, compared to 186 for the entire year in 2008.

The animal rights group says it’s questionable whether deadly methods are necessary to deal with the coyotes.
