Vandals trespassed onto Thomas Jefferson High School property Thursday night and defaced an American flag with racial slurs and hate symbols, and hung it on the flagpole, according to authorities.
Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Denver police are investigating the incident, which happened between 10 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday at the school in southeast Denver, said Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman.
The act violates two laws: defacing property and mutilation of the flag, Jackson said.
In a statement, Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg said that DPS is “shocked and deeply concerned about this incident.”
Anyone who saw the incident is asked to call Denver police at 720-913-STOP or 720-913-6050.
