CASCADE, Colo.—Colorado Springs Utilities is building a $4.5 million, 863-megawatt hydroelectric plant to help it meet state requirements for renewable energy.
Construction was beginning Tuesday on a site near Cascade, about 10 miles northwest of Colorado Springs near U.S. 24. It will use water from a pipeline from Crystal Creek Reservoir, which is located on Pikes Peak. It will produce enough electricity to power about 530 homes.
Under a state mandate, Colorado municipal utilities must derive 10 percent of their power from renewable sources by 2015.
The city-owned utility has three other hydroelectric plants.
