CENTENNIAL, Colo.—An Aurora mother has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted in the death of her young daughter.

A judge in Centennial announced the sentence Wednesday for 36-year-old Susie Ida Quartey. An Arapahoe County jury found her guilty in December of child abuse resulting in death.

The conviction carried a sentence of 16 to 48 years.

Quartey called 911 in April 2007 to report 3-year-old Jolyn Torpoh had stopped breathing. Quartey told officers the girl had been hurt in a fall in the yard, but police said the girl was beaten.

Quartey’s attorney, Thomas “Doc” Miller, had argued for a sentence in the lower range, saying she was a good mother and that Jolyn’s injuries resulted from two falls in the yard and abuse by the girl’s brother, Jake.
