BOULDER, Colo.—Authorities say a man serving a 72-year prison term for rape has been charged in a 1993 slaying in Longmont that prosecutors say is linked to him through DNA evidence.
Forty-seven-year-old Rudy Gaytan is accused in the death of 30-year-old Tammera Tatum, who authorities say was found sexually assaulted and strangled in her apartment.
Gaytan was arrested Jan. 26 at the Limon Correctional Facility, where he’s serving time for a 1996 rape.
On Wednesday, prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder after deliberation, first-degree murder during the commission of another felony, first-degree attempted sex assault and two counts of being a habitual criminal.
Boulder District Judge Maria E. Berkenkotter told Gaytan he could receive the death penalty if convicted.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 1.
