CASTLE ROCK, Colo.—A man accused in the dragging death of his girlfriend has agreed to plead guilty to first-degree murder in exchange for a life sentence without parole.

Prosecutors had said they would seek the death penalty against 38-year-old Jose Luis Rubi-Nava, who’s accused of killing 49-year-old Luz Maria Franco Fierros near Castle Rock in September 2006.

Police say she was dragged behind a car by a towing strap wrapped around her neck.

Douglas County District Judge Paul King announced the deal during a Thursday hearing in which prosecutors also agreed to drop other charges. Rubi-Nava would have to pay $5,200 restitution and the $91,000 it cost to prosecute the case as part of the agreement.

A relative of Franco Fierros was listening to the proceedings by phone.
