WASHINGTON — Chrysler, seeking $5 billion in additional U.S. aid to avoid liquidation, told the federal government the company’s “best option” remains a merger with General Motors.

Chrysler, which is in alliance talks with Italy’s Fiat SpA, held discussions with GM last year about a combination. GM isn’t interested in resuming talks because it’s focused on its own survival.
