COLORADO SPRINGS — El Paso County officials say they saved more than a half-million dollars in energy costs partly by closing most government offices on Fridays.

County spokesman Dave Rose said the savings totaled almost $550,000 since the county government buildings began implementing four-day weeks in November 2007. County commissioners had expected the savings to total $300,000 a year.

Rose said a big factor in the savings came from the central utility plant used to heat and cool the county administration building, in addition to the courthouse and jail.
