GOLDEN, Colo.—A Lakewood woman accused of killing her dog by tying him up on a hot stove has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
A judge on Monday ordered 38-year-old Tanya Martin to undergo an evaluation at the state Mental Health Institute in Pueblo.
Prosecutors say Martin put the 6-year-old Yorkshire terrier named Bobo on top of a burning telephone book on a lighted stove in October. The dog died a few days later.
Martin is charged with arson and aggravated animal cruelty.
Jefferson County district attorney’s spokeswoman Pam Russell says Martin is free on $10,000 bail and has been told to report to the state hospital when a bed becomes available, expected in two or three weeks.
