DENVER—Bankruptcy filings in Colorado were up 37 percent last year compared with the number in 2007.
The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Colorado says there were 20,943 filings last year, up from 15,279 the year before.
The number of people and businesses seeking bankruptcy protection was still below the pace in 2005, when more than 43,000 bankruptcy petitions were filed as consumers prepared for a tightening of bankruptcy rules.
On Thursday, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said there were nearly 1.12 million filings nationwide last year, up 31 percent from 850,912 in 2007.
Non-business filings were the majority of cases nationwide and in Colorado.
