PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Y.E. Yang was first to finish at last year’s Honda Classic. This time, he finished first.

Alone in front the whole way Sunday, Yang shot a 2-under-par 68 to end up one shot ahead of John Rollins and pick up his first PGA Tour victory.

The South Korean took command with three straight birdies on the front side. With the win he qualified for this week’s CA Championship at Doral and earned an invitation to next month’s Masters.

• South Korean star Jiyai Shin won the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore for her fourth LPGA Tour title in eight months, shooting her second straight 6-under 66 for a two-stroke victory over Australia’s Katherine Hull.

Eduardo Romero had four birdies on the back nine to surge to a one-shot victory over Joey Sinde- lar and Mark O’Meara at the Toshiba Classic in Newport Beach, Calif.

Roddick sparks U.S. victory

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Andy Roddick swept past Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets to give the U.S. an opening-round Davis Cup victory in the best-of-five series. This win was emphatic: 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 — and 4-1 for the U.S. Next up for the U.S. is Croatia in the quarterfinals on July 10-12, just after Wimbledon.

In other first-round series, Israel, Czech Republic, Russia, Germany and Spain won to reach the quarterfinals.

Andre Agassi will make his return to competitive tournament tennis by participating in the 30-and- over Outback Champions Series event at Surprise, Ariz., in October.

Contador wins first stage.

AMILLY, France — Alberto Contador won the first stage of the Paris-Nice race in a pouring rain. The Spaniard completed the 5.8-mile time trial around Amilly in 11 minutes, 6 seconds.

Teammate Lance Armstrong skipped this year’s race after finishing seventh in the Tour of California, but he will ride in Italy’s Milan-San Remo race March 21.

. Boston Celtics all-star Kevin Garnett will miss at least two more games with a right knee sprain. . . . Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo missed the game against Orlando with a sprained right ankle.

• The Arizona Cardinals signed cornerback Bryant McFadden to a two-year contract. McFadden, 27, made eight regular-season starts last season while helping the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory over the Cardinals.

• A men’s World Cup super-G in Kvitfjell, Norway, was canceled because of heavy snowfall. The race will not be rescheduled.

J.R. Celski of the United States won the 3,000-meter title and finished third in the 1,000 at the short track speedskating world championships in Vienna. South Korea’s Lee Ho-suk won the 1,000 in 1:33.060, ahead of American Apolo Anton Ohno, who finished in 1:33.262. The United States won the men’s 5,000 relay in 6:51.400.

• Chris Barnes defended his title in the PBA Tour’s Don Johnson Buckeye State Eliminator in Columbus, Ohio, with a 258-172 victory over Mika Koivuniemi.
