The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department is warning travelers about a man posing as a sheriff’s deputy after an imposter pulled over a woman last weekend on Interstate 70 near New Castle.

The man was driving a dark green sedan outfitted with red and blue lights. He was wearing a dark-green shirt with the word “sheriff” on back, as well as uniform pants, and a law-enforcement-style belt with a nightstick, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

He was described as 6 feet tall and weighing about 160 pounds. He appeared to be in his 30s, the woman told deputies.

The man pulled her over about 11 a.m. Saturday. She became suspicious when he began asking her personal, “unprofessional” questions.

When she refused to answer the questions, he left.

Anyone with information is asked to call 970-945-0101. Garfield County Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward.
