Yet another burglary took place this morning at 5 a.m. near the University of Denver , the 12th in a series reported in the area since Jan. 1.
The Denver Police Department now believes a single person may be responsible for the break-ins, and has released a sketch of the suspect. He is described as a black male with medium to light skin complexion, about 6 feet tall and wearing all black, according to a statement.
“From a police standpoint, we’re looking at this very aggressively,” said Public Information Officer Sonny Jackson.
In this case, the suspect entered a home in the 2000 Block of South Josephine Street on the east side of campus. He stole numerous items and also attacked a young female resident, causing her minor injuries.
Details about the victim have not been released while she cooperates with police as a witness to the crime.
DU Campus Safety is assisting in the investigation. Director Don Enloe said each incident has happened in a private residence close to the university.
Enloe said some of the victims have been students, and the suspect is primarily interested in stealing electronics that he can sell easily, such as televisions and laptops.
“Our officers are out every day, communicating with people within our community,” Enloe said. “We’re really at the point where we could use as many eyes and ears as we can get.”
To prevent burglaries, both Enloe and Jackson urged people to lock their doors and make their homes appear occupied. This includes leaving their lights on and bringing their newspapers inside.
Jackson said anyone with information or who notices something unusual in the area should notify the police.
“We want people to be the best witnesses they can be,” he said.
