BOULDER, Colo.—Anna Prins scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Friday to lift Broomfield to its third straight Class 4A state championship with a 49-47 win over Mullen at the Coors Events Center.
With the victory, top-seeded Broomfield (28-0) won its 40th straight game, and the Eagles’ seniors finished their high school careers 106-4.
Prins, a 6-foot-6 senior who is headed to Iowa State, scored 8 points in the fourth quarter alone.
With the game tied at 44-44 with 1:28 to play, Prins, the only Broomfield player to reach double figures, hit one of two free throws to give the Eagles the lead for good.
Alex Biegner hit all four of her free throws down the stretch, giving Broomfield a 49-44 advantage with 32.9 seconds remaining.
Kirsten Hess, who finished with 14 points for No. 1 seed Mullen (23-5), hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to account for the final score.
Laura Palmer rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 for the Mustangs.
The Denver school gave Broomfield a serious scare and by far the most challenging game the Eagles competed in this season. Broomfield beat each of its opponents by at least 23 points, except for Longmont, which the Eagles defeated by 11.
Broomfield limited Mullen to 27 percent from the field on 14-of-52 shooting. The Eagles finished 12 of 32 for 38 percent.
Mullen won the battle on the glass, 38-33, but lost on the defensive end, 27-20, thanks largely to Prins, who grabbed all 13 of her rebounds on that end of the floor. She also blocked six shots in the game.
The Mustangs led 21-20 at halftime and 36-34 at the end of the third quarter.
The game, intensely physical from the start, was tied eight times in the first half and three more in the second.
Mullen, which plays a Class 5A regular-season schedule, made its sixth appearance in the title game this decade, but fell short of its first state girls basketball title since 2006.
