DENVER—The U.S. Forest Service says it will spend about $5.6 million in federal stimulus money on national forests in Colorado.
Officials said Friday the money will be used to remove trees that are infested by beetles and in danger of falling along forest roads.
It will also be spent to reduce the danger of wildfires by removing dead and dry growth, and to hire Colorado Youth Conservation Corps members to clean up campgrounds, picnic areas and hiking trails.
Officials say more projects will be announced over the coming weeks.
The stimulus package includes $1.2 billion for the Forest Service overall. The agency announced a total of nearly $100 million worth of projects nationwide on Friday.
