DENVER—Colorado’s state spelling bee will go on with a new sponsor.

The Rocky Mountain News had sponsored the bee, with the winner going to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. When The E.W. Scripps Co. folded the Rocky Mountain News last month, Colorado spellers wondered if the contest would go on after this year.

The Denver Post, formerly in a joint operating agreement with the News, has announced it will sponsor the state contest starting next year.

The 2009 Colorado champion has already been named. Going to the national bee is fifth-grader Christian Smith.
