Defending national champion Winona State ended Metro State’s 19-game winning streak Saturday, beating the Roadrunners 60-59 in a men’s NCAA Division II Central Regional quarterfinal game in Marshall, Minn.
The Roadrunners (27-4) trailed by one point with 11 seconds left and had an opportunity to win after Nelson Ekeh rebounded a missed free throw. Ekeh passed the ball to Marquise Carrington, who had his shot blocked by the Warriors’ David Johnson. Carrington got the ball back but was called for traveling, and the Warriors (24-8) escaped.
Jesse Wagstaff led Metro State with 15 points and Donte Nicholas contributed 12.

MARSHALL, Minn. — Jake Morrow led the Mavericks’ long-distance barrage, shooting 4-for-8 on 3-pointers and scoring 21 points to fuel the Central Regional rout.
The Mavericks improved to 26-8. The Skyhawks (24-10) shot 1-for-10 on 3-pointers, but Fort Lewis coach Bob Hofman said a big key to the game was MSU’s offensive rebounding.
“The depth of Mankato wore us down at the end of the first half,” Hofman said. “I thought we made an early run, I thought we could’ve cut it down to two or four, but they shot the ball well and they totally outrebounded us.”
