PARIS — French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s government has survived a confidence vote in Parliament prompted by contested plans to rejoin NATO’s military command.
Lawmakers on Tuesday voted 329 to 238 in favor of the government’s foreign policy following a debate in the National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament.
Many legislators on the left and right fear rejoining NATO’s military command would compromise France’s independence. Charles de Gaulle pulled France out of NATO’s military command in 1966, seeking a less U.S.-oriented policy during the Cold War.
