BRIGHTON, Colo.—An Adams County jury has convicted a 29-year-old man of second-degree murder in the shooting of an Aurora police officer.

The verdict was handed up Thursday. Jurors acquitted Brian Allen Washington of first-degree murder.

Washington was charged with the 2006 death of 52-year-old Mike Thomas. Thomas was in plainclothes and in his personal car when he was killed.

Washington’s attorneys say he is mentally ill and didn’t know Thomas was a police officer.

Prosecutors say Washington knew Thomas and thought the officer was following him.

Jurors deliberated two days.

It wasn’t immediately known when Washington would be sentenced.
