Colorado’s football schedule next season got a late change Thursday when the Buffaloes swapped out Miami (Ohio) for Toledo.
Miami was originally scheduled to play the Buffaloes on Sept. 12 in Oxford, Ohio. But several schools in the Mid-American Conference, of which Miami and Toledo are members, adjusted their schedules.
Colorado will travel to Toledo to face the Rockets on Friday, Sept. 11. ESPN will televise the game.
It will be CU’s first nonconference game on a Friday since 1975, when it played at Miami (Fla.) and won 23-10. The Buffs regularly play Nebraska on the day after Thanksgiving.
CU’s game at Miami (Ohio) was supposed to be the back end of a home-and-home series with the RedHawks. CU defeated Miami 42-0 in Boulder in 2007.
The contract required Miami to pay CU $750,000 if it canceled the game. But that payment was waived after Toledo stepped in.
The new agreement between CU and Miami will bring the RedHawks’ basketball team to Boulder next season.
Rams’ quirky schedule
The Colorado State football team will have its latest bye week on record and an unusually early start to its Mountain West Conference games. The team’s 2009 schedule was announced Thursday.
The Rams don’t get a week off until Nov. 14, after playing at UNLV on Nov. 7. Only two regular-season games are scheduled after CSU’s bye week.
The Rams finish the season against Wyoming on the day after Thanksgiving. They also will play an early MWC game, traveling to face BYU on Sept. 26. The game against the Cougars is followed the next week by another nonconference contest, at Idaho on Oct. 3.
