DENVER—Members of a union representing Denver police officers have voted to approve a 2 percent cut in compensation as the city deals with falling sales tax revenue.
The Denver Police Protective Association said Thursday that 87 percent of the 1,069 officers who cast ballots voted to approve the cut, which would come from benefits instead of base pay.
Officers agreed to give up premium holiday pay, birthday holidays and some compensation they receive for equipment and uniforms. Association President Lt. Vince Gavito says the city has agreed to return some of those benefits in 2010 or 2011.
Firefighters are voting on similar concessions this week.
Earlier, the city laid off 11 sheriff’s deputies in an effort to save $1.2 million a year.
