SAN FRANCISCO — A South Korean woman was charged Friday by federal authorities for illegally importing more than 2 pounds of bear bile, used for medicinal purposes and as an aphrodisiac in some Asian communities.
Seongja Hyun was arrested Thursday by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agents investigating a package of crystallized bear bile from China.
Because bears are protected under an international treaty and the U.S. Endangered Species Act, bear products can only be imported with government-issued export or import permits.
