Alex Kelly, Colorado State’s redshirt freshman quarterback who had not practiced since the first day, has left the team to concentrate on a baseball career.
Kelly, third on the depth chart, played outfield for Rocky Mountain High’s state powerhouse team. Kelly did not reveal his plans.
“It’s obviously disappointing because we had high hopes for him,” coach Steve Fairchild said in a statement.
Kelly’s departure leaves CSU with two healthy quarterbacks — senior Grant Stucker and junior college transfer Jon Eastman — for the remainder of spring ball. Fairchild said half-jokingly after Saturday’s practice he wished he had a third quarterback for when he wants to sit the other two.
The Rams bring in freshman Nico Ranieri and expect to have Klay Kubiak back from surgery. Also, reserve wide receiver T.J. Borcky was initially recruited as a quarterback.
