LAFAYETTE, Colo.—Boulder County is looking for nonprofits, government agencies and schools to take thousands of young trees it acquired when the county bought a tree farm that had been repossessed by a bank.

The county bought the 73-acre farm with 15,000 trees in September but hasn’t been able to find anyone to lease and operate it. Officials say they don’t have the water to irrigate the farm.

They want to get rid of the trees but not in a way that would compete with commercial nurseries.

Cathy Thiltgen, an arborist for the county, says thousands of the trees are suffering from neglect but thousands are healthy. She says about 3,000 have been spoken for.

The county eventually plans to use the land for less water-intensive agriculture purposes.
