The Larimer County Sheriff’s Department is awaiting the results of a police investigation to see whether it will launch its own probe into the arrest of a man sought for escaping from both state and local authorities.

The fugitive, 25-year-old Christopher Dominguez, was arrested in Fort Collins on Saturday in connection with escapes from the Colorado Department of Corrections and the Larimer County Alternative Sentencing Unit.

Dominguez was a passenger in a car stopped about 4 p.m. Saturday.

When officers noticed that he was acting and agitated and nervous, they asked for his identification, said Eloise Campanella, spokeswoman for the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

When officers found out Dominguez was a fugitive, he took off running and a chase began, said Campanella.

She said that Dominguez darted into Shields Street near Richmond Street, where he ran into a car driven by a deputy responding to the chase.

Campanella said the deputy was driving slowly with both siren and lights activated.

Dominguez received minor injuries and was taken late Saturday to the Larimer County Detention Center after being treated at the scene by paramedics and then at Medical Center of the Rockies.

Currently, the Fort Collins Police Department is investigating the accident.

After the police department submits its report to Sheriff Jim Alderden, he will decide whether the Sheriff’s Department will conduct its own internal-affairs investigation or refer the incident to its accident-review board.

Campanella said Dominguez is being held for investigation of resisting arrest and false reporting, both misdemeanors, and felony escape.

Bail for the misdemeanors has been set at $10,000 and $50,000 for the felony escape.
