A citywide curfew will begin Friday and last through Sept. 27, the Denver Police Department announced today in a news release.

The curfew is designed to reduce violence by and against young people in the city, police said in a news release.

The curfew requires that children ages 17 and younger be off the streets on Friday and Saturday nights from midnight to 5 a.m.

Sunday through Thursday nights, the curfew is from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, violators will be ticketed and taken to the SafeNite Curfew site, located at Denver’s District 1 police station, 1311 W. 46th Ave. There they will be processed, interviewed and released to a parent or guardian.

Not only can the kids be cited but their parents can as well for allowing their children to violate the ordinance.

Exceptions to the ordinance include:

  •  Youths in motor vehicles involved in interstate travel.
  •  Youths going to or from work without any detour or stop.
  •  If the child is accompanied by an adult and has a note from a parent or guardian dated for that night allowing the child to be with the adult.
  •  If the youth is with a parent or guardian.

The children picked up for a curfew violation on Monday through Thursday nights will simply be issued tickets and expected to show up in court, said Tiffany Vu, head of the curfew program at the Denver Safe City Office.
