A man who took his wife hostage early this afternoon surrendered peacefully to Thornton SWAT officers just before 5 p.m. after a four-hour standoff.
The standoff occurred at a home in the 2600 block of Roosevelt Avenue, where a crisis-negotiation team spent hours talking to the armed man, identified as Roger Raymond Hoag, and his wife, said Matt Barnes, spokesman for the Thornton Police Department.
During the standoff, nearby homes were evacuated and schools placed on lockdown.
Barnes said Hoag walked out of the home at 4:52 p.m, and surrendered to a combined Thornton/Northglenn SWAT team.
Officers had responded to the home at about 1:11 p.m. on reports of a domestic disturbance. On their way to the home, they received an additional report of shots fired.
According to Barnes, there a was domestic disturbance in the house involving the wife during which the suspect fired one round from a handgun. The suspect’s son arrived on the scene. He was confronted by the supect in the front yard and two more shots were fired into the air.
Hoag’s son fled, but Hoag ran into the home, where he took his wife hostage, said Barnes.
Barnes said Hoag’s wife was physically assaulted during the ordeal, receiving minor injuries to her face and neck.
Barnes said police recovered a .357 calber handgun at the residence.
Hoag has been arrested for investigation of domestic violence, felony menacing, false imprisonment and illegally discharging a firearm.
