Robert Bryant Oakley murdered his ex-wife, Katie Oakley, on Wednesday, then killed himself with a shotgun blast, Boulder officials said Monday.
Katie Oakley, 30, a lawyer who once worked at the law firm of Davis Graham & Stubbs, was shot once in the head with a 9mm handgun that her ex-husband purchased last year.
Her wound was “immediately incapacitating,” and the weapon used to shoot her was found some distance from her body, said Sarah Huntley, spokeswoman for the Boulder Police Department.
Robert Oakley, 39, was found with a 12-gauge shotgun between his legs. It appeared he fired the shotgun, the blast causing a fatal wound to his head, Huntley said.
Boulder County Coroner Thom as Faure also ruled Monday that Katie Oakley was murdered with a bullet wound to the head and that Robert Oakley killed himself with a shot to the head.
Investigators said both weapons were registered to Robert Oakley and had been purchased legally.
Oakley, according to Boulder investigators, apparently lured his former wife to his north Boulder home.
