BOULDER — Rocky Mountain’s front-liners and depth were on display Saturday. The two-time defending Class 5A state champion Lobos received multiple contributions in a 6-1 decision of a flat Fairview in the Front Range League.
In moving to 9-3, 5-0 in league, Rocky Mountain is starting to rock — its all-staters are delivering and this season’s newer pieces are blending nicely into the mix.
Pitcher Bryan Peters was at the front by notching his third victory (17-0 career), belting a solo home run in the first inning and handling a couple of jams created by control that was unusually off. Still, the Nebraska-bound Peters combined with two others to limit the listless Knights (10-3, 4-1) to one hit.
“I couldn’t find the zone all day,” Peters said after issuing seven walks, walking in the Knights’ lone run in the third and loading the bases twice. “But I got out of some tough jams, and the guys played well behind me.”
Peters struck out eight, including the side in the second.
Said coach Scott Bullock: “I think today was a perfect example of why Bryan Peters is so good. He didn’t have his best stuff, but always made pitches when he had to.”
So did junior Marco Gonzales, who pitched the fifth and sixth innings, and Jake Stewart, who closed in the seventh.
Save for some baserunning miscues, the Lobos were fairly complete with 10 hits, four for extra bases, notably a triple by Stewart, who impressed by burning around the bags in the third after driving one into the right-center field gap. The Lobos made only one error and eight of nine starters reached base safely. Gonzales, J.R. Lopez and Mike Seidel drove home runs.
Conversely, the Knights struck out 13 times and made five errors.
“You can’t have one hit, make five errors and leave a million guys on base,” Knights coach Rick Harig said. “Three or four innings there, we were one hit from making that thing a game.”
