MILWAUKEE — The Cubs got some welcome good news Sunday on the ailing right shoulder of catcher Geovany Soto and now expect him to return to the lineup Wednesday.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Soto could be available as a pinch runner or pinch hitter earlier, but only in an emergency.

“He’s ready to go, basically,” Piniella said before Sunday’s series finale against the Brewers. “We’re not going to use him tonight. He’s feeling really, really good, and it’s good news for us, obviously.”

Webb lands on the DL

PHOENIX — Arizona ace Brandon Webb is headed to the 15-day disabled list with tightness in his pitching shoulder.

The Diamondbacks decided to make the move, retroactive to Tuesday, after Webb tested his shoulder by playing catch Sunday morning.

“I feel like we’re making progress on it, but we just need a little more time to make sure it’s totally good,” Webb said.
