MISSING NEBRASKA FAMILY

OMAHA—A northeast Nebraska couple who fled with their two children out of fear they’d lose custody were due in court Tuesday on probation violations. Matthew and Rowena Schade had almost completed their three-year probation sentences when they took off on an 800-mile trip that took them to western South Dakota and back. But now, they could face jail time. By Timberly Ross.

WOODWORKING WORSHIP

HASTINGS—A tour around First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church shows example after example of the contributions Bob Kent’s hands have made to the church. From the pulpit, altar and baptismal font in the Celebration Center to the church’s visitors center to bookshelves in the pastors’ offices, his work is pervasive. A Nebraskaland Feature by Tony Herrman of the Hastings Tribune.

BUSINESS:

DEERE-REORGANIZATION

PITTSBURGH—Deere & Co. said Tuesday it plans to combine operations that make its iconic green and yellow tractors with another unit that manufactures products like chain saws, resulting in about 200 job cuts. The world’s largest maker of farm machinery said the restructured unit will help it better meet customer needs, cut costs and boost global sales of products like riding mowers. Sales of such products have tumbled as the global economic downturn has slowed spending and made it harder to get loans. And while Deere’s farm machinery sales have been strong, the company has slashed its 2009 earnings outlook. By Manufacturing Writer Daniel Lovering. Eds: Note Nebraska interest. Also moving on national lines.
