An athletic club in the Denver Tech Center was evacuated this morning and five people were taken to local hospitals because of noxious fumes.
The incident unfolded at about 6:11 a.m. at the Colorado Athletic Club, 5555 DTC Blvd., said Andy Lyon, a South Metro Fire Rescue spokesman.
About 20 people were evacuated from the club after a chemical mix used in the club’s swimming pool and whirlpools released noxious fumes, Lyon said.
Five people were taken by ambulance to local hospitals, three to Sky Ridge Medical Center and two to Swedish Medical Center, Lyon said. All those taken to hospitals were in stable condition, Lyon said.
The fire department’s hazardous-materials crews shut off machinery running the filtering system and aired out the building. Air readings are back to normal, Lyons said, and the building has been turned back over to the club’s managers.
