LINCOLN, Neb. — Georgia’s Courtney Kupets ended her distinguished college career with a record-setting performance on the final night of the NCAA women’s gymnastics championships.
Kupets added individual titles in the uneven bars, floor exercise and balance beam Saturday to the all-around championship she won two days earlier. Her four titles tied the record for a single national meet. She ended her career with a record nine individual titles, beating the mark of eight by Kentucky’s Jenny Hansen in 1993-95.
University of Denver senior Jessica Lopez scored a 9.8313 on the vault, finishing sixth to earn first-team All-American.
• Illinois’ Paul Ruggeri defended his horizontal bar title and won the parallel bars at the NCAA men’s gymnastics championships in Minneapolis. Oklahoma’s Steven Legendre, who won the individual all-around title Friday night, defended his national titles in the vault and the floor exercise.
Nadal, Djokovic reach finals
MONACO — Rafael Nadal beat Andy Murray 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters, putting him within one victory of his fifth straight title in the French Open tuneup.
In today’s final, Nadal will play Novak Djokovic, who rallied past Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
• Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the final of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., by defeating top-seeded Elena Dementieva 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
In the other semifinal, Sabine Lisicki beat Marion Bartoli 6-3, 6-1.
Advice wins last Derby prep
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Advice spoiled Square Eddie’s return to racing, roaring from last to first to win the $300,000 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland, the last major prep race for next month’s Kentucky Derby.
• Stardom Bound has been pulled out of next month’s Kentucky Oaks because her owners say the stakes- winning filly needs a break.
Bruins defenseman loses spleen
BOSTON — Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Hunwick had his spleen removed after feeling abdominal pain.
The team said Hunwick hurt his spleen when he was checked during the second period of Boston’s 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.
• New Jersey captain Jamie Langenbrunner will miss at least two games of the Devils’ playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes because of a lower body injury.
Pitino reports extortion attempt
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino says he is the victim of an extortion attempt and has forwarded the information to the FBI. Pitino reported the threats, of an unspecified nature, to authorities last month.
• Big 12 freshman of the year Willie Warren, a 6-foot-4 guard, said he plans to remain with Oklahoma for another season. Warren averaged 14.6 points and set an Oklahoma freshman record with 67 3-pointers last season.
• Nell Fortner signed a six-year contract extension with Auburn to continue as women’s basketball coach. The Associated Press
