MONTROSE — Women interested in learning about fishing, hunting and wildlife should plan to attend a weekend workshop, May 29-31, sponsored by the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

No experience is necessary, and novices are encouraged to attend the workshop at the Jim Olterman/Lone Cone State Wildlife Area. All equipment will be supplied, and expert instructors will be on hand. Participants will receive instruction on archery, fly-fishing, cooking wild-game meat and the basics of wildlife biology.

The deadline to register for the event is May 1. A registration fee of $40 will be refunded after the workshop. Call 970-252-6000 for more information.

Big-game meetings.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife has scheduled two public meetings in the San Luis Valley to discuss big-game management and license allocation for the 2009 hunting seasons in game management units 68, 681, 682, 76, 79, 791, 80, 81, 82 and 83.

The first meeting is Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Center Middle School in Center.

The second meeting is Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the fire station in Antonito.

Heritage Day event.

More than 20 nonprofit outdoor and sportsmen’s groups from across western Colorado along with several government agencies will sponsor the second annual Outdoor Heritage Day in Palisade on Saturday.

Outdoor Heritage Day is free and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverbend Park. Activities for school-age youth include a fishing clinic, hunting simulator, climbing wall, mountain biking, nature walks, a mobile shooting range and much more. Visit for more information.

Challenge qualifying.

The Field and Stream Total Outdoorsman Challenge qualifying round will be Saturday and Sunday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops, 7970 Northfield Blvd.
