DENVER—Two newborn puppies are recovering after being abandoned in a trash bin in the northern Colorado town of Windsor.

Chery Legg said she and her mother, Annabel Suppes, and 5-year-old son, Quin, were walking in a park Monday when they heard “whining, squealing and squeaking.”

“We thought there was a baby somewhere,” Legg said.

They followed the sounds to a garbage bin and started digging through thrash until they found a white plastic bag that was tied at the top. Inside were the puppies, not more than 12 hours old. Legg says the tiny animals were “cold to the touch.”

Suppes wrapped them in her coat, and the family rushed them to Mountainwood Pet Hospital. There, the two female puppies, which weighed just a few ounces, were warmed with heating pads and fed goat milk and other liquids.

The puppies—Quin named them Pearl and Cupcake—went home with the Leggs the first night but were later transferred to the Animal Rescue Connection in Greeley, where they’re receiving around-the-clock care.

Rose Carroll, Animal Rescue Connection co-founder, said the animals are doing well and may be ready for adoption in eight to 10 weeks.

The Windsor Police Department hopes to find whoever discarded the puppies in an effort to build an animal-cruelty case against them.
