COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs police say rape victims have to wait about two weeks to talk to a detective because of a backlog of investigations.
The Gazette in Colorado Springs reported Monday there were 338 rape complaints in the city last year, 30 percent more than three years ago. Police have 12 detectives and four non-police investigators who look into rape cases.
Police say they respond to urgent cases immediately and their average response time has improved because they have three more detectives in the sex crimes unit than they did last year.
They say they devote most of their resources to child victims of sex crimes because they are the most vulnerable to recurring attacks.
Police say each sex-crime detective oversees an estimated 20 investigations at a time.
