DENVER—Colorado is getting $18 million to hire more police officers and save other public safety jobs though the recession.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced Colorado’s share of public safety recovery money Wednesday.
The money can be used to preserve jobs in police departments, courts and jails, or to add services such as treatment for mentally ill inmates.
The money is part of a $4 billion public safety purse included in the mammoth economic stimulus law passed earlier this year.
The $18 million portion was awarded based on Colorado’s population and crime rate. Colorado authorities can apply for more public safety grants by next month.
