KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City school board has picked the school chief from Pueblo, Colo., as the latest in a string of superintendents.

The district announced Thursday in a news release that John Covington has accepted the job pending finalization of contract negotiations. He would become Kansas City’s 26th superintendent since 1969.

Covington has served as superintendent of the 18,000-student Pueblo district since July 2006.

He beat out Mary Guinn, who has served as the chief academic officer of the 42,000-student Tulsa, Okla., district since 2004. Previously, Guinn was superintendent for six year in Gary, Ind.

Covington will replace Anthony Amato, who resigned as superintendent under pressure in January 2008.
