A Fulbright scholar and poet on leave from the University of Wyoming has disappeared while exploring a volcano in Japan’s Ring of Fire.
Craig Arnold, 41, an associate professor in the school’s English department, was visiting Kuchinoerabu-jima in Japan’s Ryukyu island chain.
Arnold, who is writing a series of lyric essays on his travels to Japan’s volcanos, has been missing since Sunday.
“He didn’t return to the inn, and around 9 p.m., the innkeeper called the authorities to report him missing,” Rebecca Lindenberg, Arnold’s girlfriend, said Thursday.
Japanese search-and-rescue crews have spent the past three days scouring the densely wooded slopes of the volcano.
