All 10 of the Broncos draft picks — as well as 17 undrafted free agents — showed up the for first day of the team’s minicamp Friday, and they played like, well, rookies.
“They made a lot of mistakes, and that’s what you expect them to do at this point in time,” coach Josh McDaniels said.
“But you know, there’s enough to look at out there, and there’s some promise out there. We’ll get better, and I’m sure we’ll make some more mistakes tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon. They’re trying. They’re working hard, but they’ve got a long way to go.”
The new players were all in Denver by Thursday and attended meetings with coaches and veterans last night. Each also received a copy of the team’s playbook.
“Today, it was definitely a crash course, probably just a tiny, tiny sliver of what we’re going to do,” rookie quarterback Tom Brandstater, a sixth-round draft pick, said. “Last night and this morning were some long hours for me trying to understand everything.”
Friday marked the fourth official off-season practice for the veterans. The team will hold two more sessions this weekend, a passing camp later this month and a final full-team camp from June 12-14. The camp in June is mandatory.
