TBILISI, Georgia — As street protesters seek to drive Georgian President Mikhail Saak- ashvili from office, one of the leading candidates to replace him is a former ally and fellow architect of the Rose Revolution that brought him to power.

Nino Burdzhanadze spoke forcefully Friday, a month after opposition forces took to the streets to demand Saakashvili resign over Georgia’s disastrous war with Russia and an alleged retreat from democracy.

“Without his resignation, there will be no stability here,” Burdzhanadze said.
