LOUISVILLE, Colo.—More than a hundred people grabbed trash bags and put on gloves to pick up litter at four of Louisville’s parks to celebrate the life of a man killed after being hit by a car.

The event honoring 57-year-old John Breaux comes four months after his death as he walked along the side of U.S. 287 and a vehicle veered off the road, striking him.

Breaux was well-known in the community for picking up litter on the streets.

Vicki Matthews, who joined others picking up trash Saturday, called Breaux “a behind-the-scenes silent hero” and says she’s begun to see more litter around the city since his death.

Prosecutors have charged 62-year-old Mary Jo Anne Thomas with criminally negligent homicide for the accident that killed Breaux.
