GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—It took some perseverance, but a Wisconsin angler has confirmed he broke a Utah state record with a black crappie he caught on Lake Powell.
Jim Maack of Comstock, Wis., and some friends were fishing in the Escalante Arm last week when they found a school of large crappie hiding by a sunken tamarisk grove.
A digital scale showed a couple of their catches weighed more than 3 pounds. And a quick Internet search revealed one of the fish would top the existing state record if a certified scale could be found.
Maack drove 70 miles to Bullfrog Marina before finding a bass tournament with a certified scale. The fish weighed 3 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 18.5 inches long with a 15.25-inch girth.
The tournament official and an employee of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources both verified the weight and length of the crappie.
