DENVER—The brother of a convicted murderer facing a death penalty sentence told the jurors deciding his fate that his younger sibling had a rough upbringing in Chicago where he frequently witnessed shootings and stabbings.

Maurice Ray also told jurors Tuesday he set a bad example for 23-year-old Robert Ray by being a drug dealer and being sent to prison.

Jurors convicted Robert Ray last week in the shooting deaths of two people, including a witness who was set to testify against him in a murder trial. Prosecutors say Robert Ray planned and ordered the 2005 killings of Javad Marshall-Fields and Vivian Wolfe and that his friend, Sir Mario Owens, was the shooter.

Owens was convicted and is on death row.

Jurors are expected to hear two weeks of testimony before deciding Ray’s sentence.
