LOS ANGELES — Shawn Johnson is adding a mirrorball trophy to her collection of Olympic medals. The 17-year-old gymnast was named this season’s “Dancing With the Stars” champion on Tuesday.
Johnson had been tied with fellow finalist actor Gilles Marini. Viewer votes were combined with judges’ scores to determine the “Dancing” winner. The ABC show’s host, Tom Bergeron, said “less than 1 percent” separated the two finalists.
“I’ve worked so hard for this. . .,” Johnson said before the show. ” I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it and prove to everybody that I’m more than just a gymnast.”
Fellow finalist Melissa Rycroft, who won fame on “The Bachelor,” was dismissed earlier in Tuesday’s show. The Associated Press
