Nine vendors on or near Denver’s 16th Street Mall were detained in a noontime raid Tuesday, and federal agents seized a cache of “designer” goods suspected of bearing false labels.

“The operation seized a large quantity of goods — purses, wallets, sunglasses, clothing — that are possibly knockoffs,” said Tim Counts, a spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

He said the vendors were still being interviewed late Tuesday afternoon.

The Downtown Denver Partnership permits about 30 street vendors on the 16th Street Mall, but the partnership late Tuesday afternoon was not sure whether all those detained were on the mall and operating with permits, spokeswoman Sarah Neumann said.

Any of the approved vendors found to have violated the law will lose their mall permit, she said.
