The National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden will be home to a new multimillion-dollar Energy Frontier Research Center, the U.S. Department of Energy announced Wednesday. NREL’s so-called Center for Inverse Design will be among 46 centers nationwide that will receive funding from the DOE’s Office of Science for various areas of scientific research.
NREL’s center is expected to receive $4 million annually for five years.
“These centers will mobilize the enormous talents and skills of our nation’s scientific workforce in pursuit of the breakthroughs that are essential to make alternative and renewable energy truly viable as large-scale replacements for fossil fuels,” said Secretary of Energy Steven Chu.
NREL officials will also participate in research conducted by six other Energy Frontier Research Centers.
