THORNTON — The City Council approved a pilot program this week that will help more than 1,000 people pay their water bills.
Thornton residents with incomes of 185 percent of the federal poverty level can apply for the program starting Monday, according to a news release. People who qualify will be given a $225 credit that can be taken in one chunk or spread out into $18.75 monthly credits over a year.
The federal poverty level for a family of four is $22,050. Families of four earning less than $40,793 would qualify for Thornton’s program.
If a customer’s outstanding balance is equal to or greater than $225, the one-time credit will be applied.
The program is funded by $400,000 generated through utility late fees, officials said.
