PUEBLO, Colo.—Pueblo County commissioners have voted unanimously to require all cats and dogs in the county to be licensed, effective immediately.

The new licensing law, approved Tuesday, applies to animals 6 months and older. Exemptions are allowed for guide dogs, and for farmers and ranchers with five acres or more.

A one-year license will run $20, or $10 if the animal is spayed or neutered. Pet owners who opt to purchase a three-year license will save $4, paying $56 or $26 respectively.

Commissioner Anthony Nunez says the law will only affect people who don’t control their pets and let them run loose.

The fine for having an unlicensed animal is $25 for the first offense. The penalty doubles to $50, then $100, $200 and so on for each subsequent offense.
