Matt Belisle’s six shutout innings for Colorado Springs went for naught Wednesday as the Fresno Grizzlies scored three runs in the eighth inning for a 3-1 victory over the host Sky Sox in a Triple-A Pacific Coast League game at Security Service Field.

Belisle left the game after the sixth inning having allowed seven hits and no runs. He struck out two. But after Matt Daley pitched a scoreless seventh, Damien Moss (5-2) gave up three runs (one earned) in two-thirds an inning. Fresno’s John Bowker doubled in two runs with the winning hit.

The Sky Sox took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Austin Rauch. Colorado Springs, the PCL’s best-hitting team, finished with four hits.

CU’s Zimmer honored.

Larry Zimmer, radio broadcaster for University of Colorado football, has won the 2009 Chris Schenkel Award. Archie Manning, chairman of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, announced the award Wednesday.

Zimmer, 73, is a 35-year veteran of CU football games. He is the 15th winner of the award.

“It is certainly the highlight of my career because it recognizes two of the things that I love the most, and that’s broadcasting college football and my association with the University of Colorado through the years and all the people I’ve met,” Zimmer said.

CU volleyball season starts Aug. 28.

The Colorado volleyball team will open its 2009 season against Valparaiso on Aug. 28 and its home schedule Sept. 11 against the University of Denver.

The slate has seven teams that were in last season’s NCAA Championship, including powerhouse Florida in the season-opening Florida Invitational.

“This is an ambitious schedule for this young team, but I am confident that it will prove to be very productive,” first year Buffaloes coach Liz Kritza said. CU opens its Big 12 Conference schedule on Sept. 16 at Iowa State.
